INGLEWOOD, Calif. – April 29, 2021 – Centinela Hospital Medical Center, a member of Prime Healthcare, was honored with an “A” Hospital Safety Score by The Leapfrog Group, the nation’s leading nonprofit watchdog on hospital quality and safety, in its Spring 2021 biannual report card. This achievement marks the 17th time that Centinela Hospital has earned the top “A” rating since the inception of Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades in 2012.
Centinela Hospital Medical Center was one of only 18 hospitals within Los Angeles County (includes 103 acute-care hospitals) and one of five hospitals in the South Bay area to receive an “A” rating for the Spring 2021 report card. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade assigns an A, B, C, D or F grade to all general hospitals across the country. It is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospitals’ prevention of medical errors.
“An ‘A’ safety grade is an elite designation that your community should be proud of,” said Leah Binder, president, and CEO, The Leapfrog Group. “The past year has been extraordinarily difficult for hospitals, but Centinela Hospital shows us it is possible to keep a laser focus on patients and their safety, no matter what it takes.”
The Leapfrog Group is an independent national watchdog organization driven by employers and other purchasers of healthcare committed to improving healthcare quality and safety for consumers and purchasers. Developed under the guidance of a National Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,600 U.S. acute-care hospitals twice per year.

“As a community hospital, our team dedicates themselves to ensure we are earning this ‘A’ grade every day, taking local needs into consideration and always putting the patient first,” says Mohammad A. Naser, Chief Executive Officer, Centinela Hospital Medical Center. “It is gratifying, especially during this time when all healthcare workers have put so much of themselves on the line to care for others, to have earned our 17th ‘A’ rating for Hospital Safety. This honor validates our hospital’s mission and the outstanding teamwork exhibited to continuously deliver on our commitment to quality, outcomes, patient safety, and clinical excellence.”
Centinela Hospital’s dedication to the community it serves is evident by its more than $100 million capital expansion and renovation activity. In May 2016, Centinela completed a $55 million seismic retrofit project that included the unveiling of a new hospital front entrance, lobby, admitting department, laboratory, gift shop, and administration offices. In March 2017, it opened its newly expanded emergency room that includes 10,000 square feet of additional space to increase the number of emergency room beds to 52 in addition to a 28-bed new telemetry unit. In December 2018, the hospital opened its newly remodeled maternity unit, which includes 6 LDRP birthing suites, 11 private postpartum rooms, C-section operating room, triage area, and dual nursing stations in one central location. Further remodeling and expansion projects, like hybrid cath lab and pharmacy facilities, were unveiled in 2019.
