INGLEWOOD, Calif. – October 23, 2018 – Centinela Hospital Medical Center today announced that it achieved 5-Star performance in seven treatments, procedures, and specialties from Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals. In addition, Healthgrades named Centinela Hospital among the top 10% in the nation for Cardiology and Gastrointestinal (GI) Care and recognized the facility with its 2019 Gastrointestinal Care Excellence Award™.

The achievement is part of findings featured in the Healthgrades 2019 Report to the Nation, which found that clinical performance continues to differ dramatically between hospitals regionally and nationally. Every year, Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance at almost 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 32 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions, as well as reporting on outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 15 states and the District of Columbia.*

Centinela Hospital Medical Center was named a 5-Star recipient for these seven specific treatments, procedures, and specialties:

  • Treatment of Heart Failure for 6 Years in a Row (2014-2019)
  • Defibrillator Procedures for 5 Years in a Row (2015-2019)
  • Pacemaker Procedures for 6 Years in a Row (2014-2019)

“Our team at Centinela Hospital has worked incredibly hard to ensure we maintain and deliver high-quality healthcare services to our community, and it is truly an honor to be nationally recognized by Healthgrades in so many clinical specialties,” says Linda Bradley, Chief Executive Officer, Centinela Hospital Medical Center. “This ongoing recognition by Healthgrades, including being the recipient of its Patient Safety Excellence Award for five years running, is a testament to our unwavering commitment to quality patient care, patient safety, and clinical excellence in everything we do.”

“With so many choices for care, consumers often find that their health journey can be difficult to navigate,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Healthgrades. “Information about hospital quality is helpful as they make decisions for their health, and Centinela Hospital has distinguished itself as an exceptional organization for cardiac and gastrointestinal care.”

This variation in care has a significant impact on health outcomes. For the 2019 Report to the Nation, Healthgrades compared Specialty Excellence Award Recipients as a group, to all other hospitals, as a group, and found:

  • From 2015-2017, patients treated at hospitals receiving the Gastrointestinal Care Specialty Excellence Award have, on average, a 26.7 percent lower risk of experiencing a complication or dying while in the hospital than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award.**
  • From 2015-2017, patients treated at hospitals which did not receive the Gastrointestinal Care Specialty Excellence Award are, on average, 1.36 times more likely to experience one or more complications or die in the hospital than if they were treated at hospitals that did receive the award.**

* For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 45 million Medicare inpatient records for almost 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide to assess hospital performance in 32 common conditions and procedures, and evaluated comparative outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 15 states and the District of Columbia. Healthgrades recognizes a hospital’s quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5-star (statistically significantly better than expected), 3-star (not statistically different from expected), and 1-star (statistically significantly worse than expected) categories.
