Centinela Hospital Medical Center Receives Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation

(Inglewood, CA – May 1, 2023) – Centinela Hospital Medical Center takes senior emergency care to the next level by announcing today that the hospital earned accreditation as a Geriatric Emergency Department by the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). This accreditation recognizes that Centinela Hospital is focused on the highest standards of care for older adults.

“I applaud our Centinela team for this achievement that reassures seniors that we have the necessary expertise, equipment and qualified staff to provide superior, age-appropriate care,” said Mohammad A. Nasar, CEO of Centinela Hospital. “We will continue to advance our goal of providing personalized, well-coordinated care to older adults throughout their Emergency Department and hospital experience.”

Centinela Hospital is a member of Prime Healthcare, one of the nation’s leading health systems with 45 hospitals and more than 300 outpatient locations in 14 states. Twenty-five Prime hospitals are currently accredited as Geriatric Emergency Departments by the ACEP.

The Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation (GEDA) program is the culmination of years of progress in emergency care of older adults. In 2014, ACEP along with Society for Academic Emergency Medicine, Emergency Nurses Association, and American Geriatrics Society, developed and released geriatric ED guidelines, recommending measures ranging from adding geriatric-friendly equipment to specialized staff to more routine screening for delirium, dementia, and fall risk, among other vulnerabilities.

“Prime Healthcare is focused on ensuring seniors have the best experience possible when coming to our hospitals, including shorter wait times when visiting our emergency department, so GEDA was the logical next step for Centinela Hospital,” said Anne Xenos, Executive Director of Senior Care and Strategic Partnerships for Prime Healthcare. “We are committed to being leaders in the healthcare community with our senior focused service line, which provides tailored, well-coordinated care for older adults who visit our Emergency Departments.”

The voluntary GEDA program provides specific criteria and goals for emergency clinicians and administrators to target. To receive accreditation, an emergency department must incorporate best practices for geriatric care, along with inter-disciplinary geriatric education, and have geriatric appropriate equipment and supplies available.

Some of the best practices embraced by the geriatric emergency departments include:

    • Ensuring geriatric-focused education and interdisciplinary staffing
    • Providing standardized approaches to care that address common geriatric issues
    • Ensuring optimal transitions of care from the ED to other settings (inpatient, home, community-based care, rehabilitation, long-term care)
    • Promoting geriatric-focused quality improvement and enhancements of the physical environment and supplies

In addition to GEDA, Centinela Hospital recently received an “A” rating in hospital safety from The Leapfrog Group. This achievement marks the 10th straight ‘A’ that Centinela Hospital has earned since 2018. Centinela Hospital was also recognized on the 2022 Fortune/Merative Top 100 Hospitals® list for the sixth time as one of the top-performing community hospitals in the nation. Earlier this year, Centinela Hospital was recognized by Healthgrades as a 2023 Patient Safety Excellence Award™ recipient. This distinction places Centinela Hospital among the top five percent of all short-term acute care hospitals as evaluated by Healthgrades. This is the ninth year that Centinela Hospital has achieved this prestigious recognition.
